Choose tax for a line

Open Sales, then Invoices. Select New Invoice, or open a draft and select Edit. Enter the customer and line items. Opening the list and draft needs View invoices.

  1. In the line's Tax column, select the tax group. Scroll the line table horizontally if the column is outside the visible area.
  2. Repeat the selection for each line that needs a group, using No Tax for lines with no selected rate.
  3. Select Preview Invoice to check the calculated document if you have Create invoices.
  4. Select Save as Draft on a new invoice, or Save Changes on the edit form.

What happens next

Saving calculates tax from each line's amount after its line discount, using the selected group's currently active rates. A customer whose saved exemption passes QixCount's expiry check has no invoice tax calculated. See exemption certificates.

New lines begin with No Tax, so check their selections even if a default tax group exists. The saved calculation can differ from the form's running estimate, particularly with compound rates. Saving a draft does not send it to the customer.

For vendor documents, follow Enter tax on a bill.

Good to know

Invoice tax is selected per line.

Different lines can use different groups, or no tax. You need Create invoices for a new invoice and Edit invoices to change a draft. Only drafts allow line changes. The preview action also needs Create invoices, including when used from the edit form.
