WarningCorrections and another close can add ledger entries and change the year-end figures. Reopening does not undo the first close.
In General, reopening a year changes its closing status to In Progress.
Reopen the year
- Open Books, then Year-end close, and select the closed year.
- Select Reopen Year.
- Confirm the action.
- Reopen the affected monthly period if its status blocks the correction.
The General year-reopen action clears the closing time and person. It does not request a reason or create the monthly Reopen History entry. That history comes from reopening the month itself.
A closed General year blocks ordinary journals even when its monthly periods are absent or open. Reopen the year as well as any closed month before posting. Other posting checks still apply, including the backdating limit. A locked month cannot be reopened through its period controls.
Close again after the correction
- Open the year-end closing record.
- Review Financial Overview.
- Complete any checklist item you previously cleared with Undo.
- Select Close Fiscal Year.
- Confirm the close.
What happens next
Re-closing calculates revenue, expenses and net income from ordinary posted activity, leaving closing entries out of those displayed totals. Its new closing entries use the balances still left in the year after earlier closing entries. With no remaining balances, the close does not repeat the original income transfer.
The year returns to Closed and receives a new closing time and person. Qualifying open periods for that year close again. Unlike closing through the monthly period page, the year-end bulk close does not update a month's closed-again history date.
Next, download an updated year-end package.
Good to know
Existing closing entries stay posted. Reopening the year does not reopen its monthly periods or reset the checklist.
Who can do this and what you need
You need Manage business settings, roles & permissions permission. The year must be Closed. Reopening a month separately needs View fiscal periods and Manage fiscal periods (close/reopen/lock) permissions.
If Year-end close isn't in the sidebar, someone with settings access can turn on Period close in Features.
