Export the audit trail

Download a CSV of recorded audit events and check which filters and columns it includes.

Who can do this
Owners, or people with View audit trail and Export audit logs
Where
Books, then Audit trail
You'll need
Audit & compliance turned on in Features
On this page

The Audit Trail page lets you download recorded events as a comma-separated values (CSV) file. The download contains up to the newest 5,000 matching entries.

Download recorded events

  1. Open Audit trail in Books.
  2. Select Filter if you need to set the record type, event or dates.
  3. Select Apply Filters after changing those filters.
  4. Select Export.

Check access and export scope

The steps need View audit trail to open the page and Export audit logs to download. Owners have export access. Assigned accountants from an approved firm have view access, but their standard access does not include export. The button can appear even when you do not have export permission.

The download uses these filters:

Included filter What it selects
Model Type Entries for a matching record type.
Event Type Entries for the selected event.
From Date Entries on or after this date.
To Date Entries on or before this date.

The file uses the record type, event and dates. Search text, a selected user, critical-only filtering and pending-review filtering do not narrow the download. Check the file's scope before sharing it.

Understand the file columns

The columns include timestamp, event, record type and ID, record label, user name, email and role, IP address, description, amount impact, review requirement, reviewer, and review time. Old and new field values are not included in this file.

Opening an export does not mark entries as reviewed or change the underlying documents. For the detail available on screen, see Review the audit trail.

Good to know

If Audit trail isn't in the sidebar, someone with settings access can turn on Audit & compliance in Features.
