I cannot post to this date

Read the posting block to distinguish a closed period, closed year or backdating restriction.

Who can do this
Owners, or people with permission to post the affected record
You'll need
The intended posting date and the exact error message
On this page

A posting block does not mean the date should be changed. Read the message before choosing a correction.

Identify the restriction

  1. Note the date on the record you are trying to post.
  2. Copy the full error message, if any. On a journal entry, Post Entry can be disabled with no message; compare its date with Fiscal periods and Year-end close.
  3. Check whether it names a closed period, locked period, closed fiscal year or backdating limit.
  4. Ask the person responsible for the books to review that restriction.

A closed month rejects ordinary posting. Someone with Manage fiscal periods (close/reopen/lock) can use the reopen workflow with a reason. A locked period has no reopen action on its page.

A closed General fiscal year also blocks ordinary journals, even without monthly periods. Review the year reopening guide before proceeding.

Check the remaining controls

The backdating setting is separate. Reopening a period does not remove that limit. Nor does it grant posting permission or fix an unbalanced entry.

Do not choose another date solely to evade a block. Agree the intended date and treatment with your accountant. Contact support if the named restriction does not match the record or you cannot identify which period is blocking it. Include the business, record reference, date and message.
