Add or edit a bank or credit card account
Set up a manual account, link its ledger account, and manage its active status.

- An existing active asset or liability account in the general ledger
On this page
Create an account for transactions you enter manually or import from a file. This does not connect to your bank. Use the Plaid connection task for a bank feed.
Add an account
- Open Banking, then Bank accounts.
- Select Add Account.
- Enter Account Name, up to 100 characters.
- Select Account Type: Checking, Savings, Credit Card, Line of Credit, Money Market, or Other.
- Enter optional Bank Name, Account Number, Routing Number, and Description.
- Keep Currency at USD - US Dollar for this guide.
- Enter Opening Balance. The form uses a negative number for a credit card balance owed.
- Enter As of Date.
- Select Link to GL Account.
- Select Create Account.
Edit or deactivate an account
- Open the account from Bank accounts.
- Select the pencil in Account Details.
- Change the account details or clear Account is Active to deactivate it.
- Select Save Changes.
The opening balance and its date are read-only after creation. Inactive accounts disappear from the active-account choices in transaction forms.
What happens next
You land on the account detail page. The opening balance initializes its banking balance; saving the account does not post a journal entry. Next, add a transaction or import a statement file.
Delete Account appears when the account has no transactions. It needs Delete bank transactions and can't be undone. An account with transactions cannot be deleted; deactivate it instead.
Who can do this and what you need
Owners have access. Staff need View reconciliations to open accounts, Create bank accounts/transactions to add one, and Edit bank transactions to edit one. The linked general ledger account must already exist; the form lists active asset and liability accounts.
