# Add or edit a bank or credit card account

Set up a manual account, link its ledger account, and manage its active status.

Canonical: https://demo.qixcount.com/help/banking/add-a-bank-account

Who can do this: Owners; *View reconciliations* to open; *Create bank accounts/transactions* to add; *Edit bank transactions* to edit

Where: Banking, then Bank accounts

You'll need: An existing active asset or liability account in the general ledger

Create an account for transactions you enter manually or import from a file. This does not connect to your bank. Use the [Plaid connection task](https://demo.qixcount.com/help/banking/connect-a-bank-with-plaid) for a bank feed.

## Add an account

1. Open **Banking**, then **Bank accounts**.
2. Select **Add Account**.
3. Enter **Account Name**, up to 100 characters.
4. Select **Account Type**: **Checking**, **Savings**, **Credit Card**, **Line of Credit**, **Money Market**, or **Other**.
5. Enter optional **Bank Name**, **Account Number**, **Routing Number**, and **Description**.
6. Keep **Currency** at **USD - US Dollar** for this guide.
7. Enter **Opening Balance**. The form uses a negative number for a credit card balance owed.
8. Enter **As of Date**.
9. Select **Link to GL Account**.
10. Select **Create Account**.

## Edit or deactivate an account

1. Open the account from **Bank accounts**.
2. Select the pencil in **Account Details**.
3. Change the account details or clear **Account is Active** to deactivate it.
4. Select **Save Changes**.

The opening balance and its date are read-only after creation. Inactive accounts disappear from the active-account choices in transaction forms.

## What happens next

You land on the account detail page. The opening balance initializes its banking balance; saving the account does not post a journal entry. Next, [add a transaction](https://demo.qixcount.com/help/banking/add-a-manual-transaction) or [import a statement file](https://demo.qixcount.com/help/banking/import-a-statement-file).

**Delete Account** appears when the account has no transactions. It needs *Delete bank transactions* and can't be undone. An account with transactions cannot be deleted; deactivate it instead.

## Who can do this and what you need

Owners have access. Staff need *View reconciliations* to open accounts, *Create bank accounts/transactions* to add one, and *Edit bank transactions* to edit one. The linked general ledger account must already exist; the form lists active asset and liability accounts.
