Who can do this: Owners, or people with *View financial reports*

Where: Tax, then Tax liability

You'll need: Tax turned on in Features

The tax liability report groups recorded sales tax by rate. It also shows filing periods whose end dates fall in your selected range. You need *View financial reports*; owners have it.

## Choose a period

1. Open **Tax**.
2. Select **Tax liability**.
3. Enter **Start Date**.
4. Enter **End Date**.
5. Select **Filter**.
6. Review **Tax Breakdown by Rate** and, when present, **Filing Periods**.

The initial range is the current month. **Reset** restores it. The quick-select links also offer prior month, quarter and year ranges.

## Understand the amounts

| Label | What QixCount displays |
| --- | --- |
| Taxable Sales | Sum of the taxable amounts recorded for the selected tax rates. A line with multiple rates can contribute to more than one rate's total. |
| Tax Liability | Sum of tax amounts in those recorded entries. |
| Effective Rate | Tax liability divided by the displayed taxable sales, multiplied by 100. |
| Invoices | Distinct invoice count within each rate's row. |
| Balance Due | Sum of remaining balances on the filing records shown, using their entered amounts. |

## What happens next

Filtering does not change transactions or filing records. The report uses when tax activity was recorded in QixCount, which can differ from the invoice date. It is not a list of customer payments. Its tax total is separate from the manually entered filing-period balances.

The current date filter can omit activity recorded later on **End Date**. Contact support if an expected entry from that day is missing.

Next, [review tax by jurisdiction](https://demo.qixcount.com/help/taxes/tax-by-jurisdiction) or [record a return](https://demo.qixcount.com/help/taxes/record-a-tax-return).

## Good to know

If **Tax liability** isn't in the sidebar, someone with settings access can turn on **Tax** in [Features](https://demo.qixcount.com/help/setup/features-and-presets).
