# Review an existing invoice return credit

Understand how a retained return credit affects a Nonprofit invoice balance and blocks a full void.

Canonical: https://demo.qixcount.com/help/nonprofit/invoice-return-credits

Who can do this: Owners, or people with *View invoices*; opening the journal also needs *View journal entries*

Where: Sales, then Invoices

You'll need: An invoice with a retained return credit; approved mappings, an active Operating fund and an accessible active or trial Nonprofit subscription

## Review the invoice

1. Under **Sales**, open **Invoices**.
2. Open the invoice from the list.
3. Find **Return Credits** in the totals.
4. Compare **Paid** or **Payments Received**, **Return Credits**, and the displayed remaining balance.
5. Select **Journal Entry** if you need to inspect the original invoice posting.

QixCount calculates the balance as invoice total less net payments and active return credits. A negative balance can appear when credits exceed the unpaid amount. The screen then identifies a customer credit balance for review before another payment.

## Understand a retained credit

A source-linked credit uses the original invoice line's quantity, discounts, tax, and financial coding. Active credits cannot exceed the original quantity; a reversed credit releases its reserved quantity. For a grant-linked invoice, the return date cannot precede the invoice date, including when the invoice is future-dated.

An active return credit blocks a full invoice void. A posted credit reversal recalculates the invoice balance and retains the original financial and physical return history.

The invoice screen has no return-credit creation button. Contact support if an existing credit needs investigation or correction through a workflow you cannot access.

## Good to know

If a Nonprofit invoice already has a retained return credit, its balance includes that credit separately from payments.

You need **View invoices** permission to inspect the invoice and **View journal entries** permission to open its journal.
