# Why can't I complete a reconciliation?

Review the difference, record state, deadline and permission to perform reconciliation.

You need *Perform reconciliation* permission and an unfinished, unlocked reconciliation. Check the statement date, ending balance and cleared selections, aiming for zero. At exactly $0.01 in either direction, the ordinary completion button stays disabled. Enforced deadlines can block completion. A nonzero difference needs the configured variance allowance and acknowledgment before variance completion is possible; completing does not post an adjusting journal. Opening the clearing screen after completion returns to the details with a message.
