# Why can't I post a balanced journal?

Balance alone does not satisfy line-count, period, backdating and Nonprofit checks.

You need *Post journal entries* permission and a draft with at least two saved lines. Zero-amount lines are not saved. A closed General year, closed or locked fiscal periods and the backdating limit can block the date even when debits equal credits. Nonprofit also checks mappings, financial coding and balanced funds. Saving a draft does not bypass posting checks.
